Robert Pilney, the director of strategic sourcing & supplier diversity identifies, develops and manages indirect spend categories at The Hartford. He has built a strong supplier diversity program by working closely with suppliers and sourcing specialists to make connections. His primary strategy is based on fostering relationships between MWBEs and internal customers at The Hartford, and creating a competitive sourcing environment for all suppliers. RFP protocols were developed that require diverse suppliers to participate in the process. Robert launched an upgraded supplier portal for registration and services classification.

Robert has also adopted best practices in supplier diversity used at other corporations and adapts them to Hartford’s program. His efforts to build a strong supplier diversity program have had full support from the executive leadership team, and he believes this is one of the most important best practices. Robert represents The Hartford as an active corporate member at diverse supplier organizations like the Greater New England MSDC, the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and the Women President’s Educational Organization.
