Honoring Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee: A Legacy of Advocacy and Empowerment

Houston’s minority business community mourns the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. She will always be remembered for her fierce advocacy for equality in all forms for all people. She was a staunch supporter of building generational wealth through entrepreneurship to uplift communities all over Houston. Her loss is a profound one, not only for her family and friends but for the entire nation.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee was an advocate for justice, equity, and the betterment of her community. For over 30 years, she has worked tirelessly in dedication to her constituents. Her unwavering commitment to leveraging the power of government to improve the lives of everyday people will leave an indelible mark on Houston.

I first met Congresswoman Jackson Lee through her husband, Dr. Elwyn Lee who was a mentor to me during my college years. I then got to know her better over the years as a young political staffer, then professionally as an advocate for minority-owned businesses. We were fortunate to have her join us in celebrating HMSDC’s 50th Anniversary last November where she presented us with a flag that she requested be flown over the capital to commemorate the occasion. She has always lent her support to our organization and its members. At our last meeting, I will always remember that she asked, “What else can I do to help you?”, which was the true essence of this servant leader.

May we all find solace in remembering her achievements and the positive impact she made on countless lives. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and her spirit will live on through the causes she championed.

With deepest sympathy,
