Despite the challenging economic climate, General Motors managed to spend $2.5 billion with diverse suppliers in 2008 under supplier diversity manager Art McClellan’s guidance. One of the country’s first corporations and the first automotive manufacturer to establish a formal minority supplier development program over 41 years ago, it has purchased over $67.5 billion from direct and minority suppliers since its program’s inception. For more than 20 straight years, GM’s tier one minority spending has exceeded $1 billion.

McClellan is especially proud that GM has introduced two new MBEs into areas that were not previously occupied by MBEs. It has also conducted two forums - financial and operational efficiency - following discussions with its suppliers. In addition, by aligning its team with purchasing, it has improved communication and results following implementation.

GM’s success is measured both by the dollars spent with minority and women suppliers and development tools to grow diverse businesses.
