Vickie Davanzo, supplier diversity manager for NiSource, Inc., has proven that utility companies, often viewed as non traditional companies for supplier diversity leadership, can grow a diverse supplier base with the right program and strong business case. NiSource is a Fortune 500 natural gas and electric utility company that has increased its diverse supply base from $12 million to $300 million in direct spend since 2009. Vickie’s approach includes leveraging diverse suppliers in the states served through outreach efforts and enhancing supplier capabilities in line with the company’s needs. She advises that achieving goals requires intentional effort to build understanding and respect for supplier diversity, which includes increasing transparency and internal collaboration.
Vickie brought a wealth of experience to NiSource, having developed the supplier diversity program at FirstEnergy. She led economic development efforts, which included multi-million-dollar projects in alternative energy, food processing, advanced manufacturing and distribution. During her career, Vickie has built supplier diversity programs from the ground up by developing value-added, industry leading and sustainable initiatives that leverage diverse supplier capabilities.
